Official drop-off rules in Houston

City of Houston Residential Drop-Off Centers

Houston runs six Residential Drop-Off Centers (North, 9003 N Main; Northwest, 14400 Sommermeyer; Northeast, 5565 Kirkpatrick; Southeast, 2240 Central St; South, 5100 Sunbeam; Southwest, 10785 SW Freeway). Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. Residents may use them up to four times a month.

They take mattresses, furniture (two large items), tree waste, bagged junk waste, household appliances (refrigerators need a tag showing the Freon was removed), recyclables, up to 5 passenger tires per visit (10 a month) and up to 5 quarts of motor oil.

Not accepted: garbage and food waste, rocks, dirt, bricks, concrete, TVs, truck tires, paint and chemicals. Pickups and trailers up to 10 ft are allowed; U-Hauls, box trucks, contractor vans and dump trailers are not. For bulk or tree waste bring a Texas ID plus a City of Houston utility bill or lease with the same address.

Dump or dumpster: which is cheaper in Houston?

For a pickup load or two, hauling it yourself usually wins. Once a cleanout or remodel runs to several loads, a dumpster can cost less than your time, fuel and repeated gate fees.

Haul it yourself

Gate fee by weight, by load, or free for residents at some city sites

  • You need a truck or trailer, a way to cover and secure the load, and time for each round trip
  • Best for 1-2 pickup loads, yard waste, or single items like a mattress or appliance
  • Resident-only sites usually ask for ID or proof of address

Rent a dumpster

One price delivery, haul-away and disposal together

  • Dropped at your driveway; you load at your own pace, then it's hauled away
  • Best for several pickup loads: a 15 yard holds about 4 pickup loads and a 20 yard about 6 (redbox+)
  • Weight limits and extra-ton fees vary by company, so compare quotes

Rules and fees change, and not every site takes the public. Listings come from EPA and state agency records, not from the operators. Some sites accept only commercial haulers, residents, or certain materials, and hours change with holidays and weather. Call or check the operator's official page before you load the truck.
