Unsecured loads cost extra ($5.54 for residents, $12.00 for non-residents). The city counts one load as 4 x 8 x 2 feet of truck bed or trailer space. Vehicles must be rated under two tons, and you can bring up to 3 mattresses and about 9 cubic feet of concrete, dirt, rock or brick.

Construction and demolition debris (including drywall and carpet), roofing, hazardous waste, liquids, fire extinguishers, gas cylinders and roll-off containers are not accepted. Household hazardous waste such as paint, solvents and pesticides goes to the residents-only collection center run by Safety Kleen at 2720 Girard NE ((505) 884-2277), free for residents, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Dump or dumpster: which is cheaper in Albuquerque?

For a pickup load or two, hauling it yourself usually wins. Once a cleanout or remodel runs to several loads, a dumpster can cost less than your time, fuel and repeated gate fees.

Haul it yourself

Gate fee by weight, by load, or free for residents at some city sites

  • Official local rate: City residents pay $5.00 per load plus tax (bring a utility bill, driver's license or ID); non-residents pay $12.00 per load plus tax.
  • You need a truck or trailer, a way to cover and secure the load, and time for each round trip
  • Best for 1-2 pickup loads, yard waste, or single items like a mattress or appliance
  • Resident-only sites usually ask for ID or proof of address

One price delivery, haul-away and disposal together

  • Dropped at your driveway; you load at your own pace, then it's hauled away
  • Best for several pickup loads: a 15 yard holds about 4 pickup loads and a 20 yard about 6 (redbox+)
  • Weight limits and extra-ton fees vary by company, so compare quotes
